My Mother
Share
I’ve always been fascinated by the way people live- their spaces, their rituals, what products they're using. I’ve decided to start a new series where I visit my clients (and other people I admire), photograph their homes and skincare shelves and sit down with them to talk about their skincare routine and lives.
First up, my mom!
Our chat was interesting. It turns out home girl doesn't really think too much about her skin and does the barest minimum. Direct quote: 'I wash my face in the shower with soap, something like... who are those ones from the 70s and 80s? I can't remember the name of them. You buy them in Walgreens.'
Love it. Because here's the thing,
Skincare is simply to serve the individual. It exists at a strange intersection: it’s deeply personal, yet undeniably shaped by marketing, capitalism, and mass consumerism. My mother uses bar soap and doesn't wear sunscreen, yet she has some of the most beautiful skin I've ever seen . She's never had a pimple and yet I can't remember a day when I haven't had one. What's up with that?
It's because skin is so much more than the products you put on your face. It's genetics, it's lifestyle, it's as my dermatologist rudely told me once, 'it's just the way God made ya!'
So anyways, this is the entire point of this series, REAL skincare routines, real people, real homes.
I want to see what that people are actually using.
And with that, Amanda Taylor, 62, and her skincare routine
